Here's a well-known secret: the best time to buy winter outerwear is during the warmer months. The items you find will be from the last season, but you can still add some really nice pieces to your closet for a much lower cost.
Snow Peak is a Japanese outdoor lifestyle brand that is not Patagonia or The North Face and that works for me. Sometimes it's nice to wear something that 9 other dudes on the train isn't also wearing. They make some boss camp gear and clothing, but just a bit too expensive for my liking. Except when things go on sale.
Case in point, this Utility Pocket Down Jacket is normally 600 bills, but is on sale now for $ 300. It's water resistant and has this really cool zippered utility chest pocket that can hold all sorts of stuff you would need if you were camping in the Japanese mountains. But since you're more likely to wear it on the crosstown bus, it can also hold your wallet and iPhone just as well. Comes in 4 colors, the jacket has a really cool, less common, offset zippered close.
